The fabric used in this art form is usually thin and loosely woven fabric like Georgette, malmal cotton, or gajji silk that might hold the dye properly. After obtaining the fabric, the area to be dyed is marked with fugitive colors, then a clear plastic sheet with pinholes is kept over the marked area, and with the usage of fugitive colors, the desired pattern is transferred. The artisan then slowly pulls a marked part of the fabric and is tied tightly with nylon thread after which they're washed to remove the imprint and are dipped into naphthol solution and dyed in any light colors for a couple of minutes.

After that, the dye is rinsed and dried and tied again and dipped into the final color, and allowed to dry for 4 hours without removing the knots. After the final dyeing, the complete fabric is washed and starched, if necessary. The result is usually a deep-colored base with dots of diverse colors forming a pattern.
